Between the Hook and Load

A professional look at the type of equipment, and proper use of the gear, that crane operators take for granted on every job site.

As a reader of this magazine, I am amaze by the variety of advertisements. So, I separate them into categories. First: cranes, hoists, and other lifting devices with hooks (come-a-longs). Then, second, loose gear (catch-all term) for all the tools advertised that attach an object to a crane hook. A third category is for the fabricator of lifting fixtures and maintenance companies. The variety of loose gear is due to the needs of a particular industry, and this article focuses on how this equipment is attached below the hook. (read the full article on page 8 in the magazine)

Steel Prices Soften, Bucking Inflation

Prices for steel are declining giving the industry a much needed boost in availability, manufacturing, and profitability.

Steel buyers rejoice: Prices for the metal should continue their long-term decline over the coming months, falling some 24% below current levels to reach $710 per ton by the end of 2024. “If current trends continue, prices will be down of the third year in a row, which is historic,” said Josh Spoores, Head of Steel Americas Analysis at CRU, a market analysis and forecast outfit.
