Seawalls not only hold back Earth’s naturally encroaching and rising water table, but they help to establish the shorelines throughout the World.

Civilization flourished because humans shuffled themselves and materials from one place to another, advancing their species’ existence. The waterways afforded the first effective avenues of travel, i.e., the Tigris & Euphrates rivers, the Nile River, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean. Only in the 18th century, by replacing the ox cart, did the rail system land transport start efficiently connecting the cities to ports for commerce to grow and support Earth’s 8.4 billion people – for better or worse. Man endeavored to improve water access in the Ancient World, from a canoe landing to today’s container terminals. The Erie Canal at 200: Still Alive and Well

Celebrating its bicentennial, this famous waterway continues to thrive, functioning as it has since its construction, and is a symbolic marvel of industrial achievement.

Eighteenth century canals in England transformed a coal-rich, navigable waterway-poor country into a major player in the coming industrial revolution. But a few decades later and several thousand miles to the west, one canal, and its branches took things to a new level. (read the full article on page 16 in the magazine)

CP&A Urges Crane Industry to Better Utilize Heat Straightening

Article by Casper, Phillips & Associates advises the crane industry not to overlook heat straightening as a method of repair when structural beams or columns are damaged.

EXCERPT: Heat straightening is the ideal solution when a beam or column does not have significant crack formation. It has been used to repair ship-to-shore container crane booms, where failure led to the boom up limit switch not being activated, causing the boom to bend. Heat straightening is not for situations where cracks form because of high-cycle fatigue. (read the full article on page 24 in the magazine or online here)
